Taiwan Facts & Figures

Taiwan has one of the largest currency reserves in the world. It is one of the world leaders in information technology and is the largest producer in the world for certain parts thereof.

Many Taiwanese companies have factories in mainland China, usually because of cheap labour. More advanced technology and R&D remain in Taiwan, however. Taiwan is now investing heavily in China.

The advancing economic integration with China also offers foreign companies good opportunities to approach the Chinese market. Partly because of the high level of education, large multinationals are increasingly investing in their own research centres.

The total value of exports amounted to $ 306 billion in 2013. The main export products are electronics, displays, machinery and chemicals. China, Hong Kong, the United States and Japan are the main export partners. The total value of imports amounted to $268 billion in 2013. The main import products are electronics, machinery, oil and metals. Japan, China and the United States are the most important import partners.
