Low Water Surcharge inland barge shipments

The persistent drought in Europe is causing extremely low water levels on the rivers. The low water level of, for instance, the Rhine, creates capacity problems in inland shipping because fewer containers can be loaded on board.
The low water has a negative effect on the draft. Additional ships are currently being used to process the cargo on offer. These additional costs are compensated by barge operators, by introducing a low water surcharge.

According to the weather forecasts, the drought will persist for the time being.

Should the water levels continue to drop, there will be no other option than to use other modalities.

As mentioned earlier,a Low Water Surcharge has also been introduced for all cargo transported to Montréal via the St Lawrence River.
