US Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS)

In spite of an initial exception for the EU, the USA has started imposing higher duties on steel and aluminium, as from June 1st.

The American government has published a list of all products that will be subject to this increase; a number of aluminium products will see their duties raised to 10%, whereas steel will now be charged at 25% import duties.

The customs codes are registered in the US Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS). This American system is like the Harmonized System (HS).

Virtually every country in the world uses the HS system. Internationally the first 6 digits of the HS code are the same. After the first 6 digits the remaining numbers may vary per country.

The EU has advised to take countermeasures.
